FAQs About the Flag Feature on Instagram

What does flag mean on instagram

On Instagram, there is a feature known as ‘Flagged Content’. This feature allows users to report content that violates Instagram’s Community Guidelines. The Flag feature tags posts which may contain damaging or inappropriate material, such as nudity, hate speech, spam and other potentially harmful content.

When a user flags a post, the content is reviewed by Instagram moderators who decide if it does indeed violate guidelines and warrants removal from the platform. If so, the post will then be removed and its creator may get a warning. It’s important to keep in mind that flagging content doesn’t guarantee removal of the post. However, it helps Instagram identify and remove violating content while promoting a safe community experience.

When you select the Flag icon to the right of a post on Instagram or in your feed, you can choose one of several flagging options including:

  • Offensive language
  • Spam
  • Violence
  • Self-harm
  • Nudity and sexual activity
  • Illegal activities
  • Hateful conduct based on race/ethnicity/national origin/religion/gender identity/age or disability

If you come across any inappropriate material on Instagram that violates Community Guidelines, please use the Flag option to help moderate it so everyone can continue enjoying positive experiences online.

How do I flag a post or comment on Instagram?

The flag feature on Instagram allows users to report content that violates the platform’s guidelines. When a user flags content on Instagram, it is sent to the Instagram Team for review.

Flagging a post on Instagram is simple:

  1. Tap the three dots in the top-right corner of a post or comment that you want to flag.
  2. Select “Flag as inappropriate” from the menu that appears.
  3. Select one of the options in the window that appears and submit your report.

When you flag a comment, you will also have the ability to block or restrict the other user if you wish to do so. You can also choose whether or not to hide my comment if it contains profanity and/or if it’s disrespectful, harassing, or bullying content. If you do choose to hide your comment, it will no longer show up publicly in your feed or anyone else’s feed who views your profile or posts related to this flagged content.

Please keep in mind that all flags are confidential and none of your identifying information will be given out when an account is reported for violating our Community Guidelines; reports are made anonymously and only reviewed by our teams specialized in handling these types of issues. We take these reports very seriously so we’re grateful for when members of our community help us out by flagging content that goes against our Guidelines!

What happens when I flag a post or comment?

When you flag a post or comment on Instagram, the content will be sent to Instagram moderators for review. Once reviewed, flagged posts and comments may be removed from the platform if they violate Instagram’s Community Guidelines. Posts or comments that are reported but do not violate these guidelines will remain on the platform.

When a post or comment is taken down, its creator will be notified of their removal and given an explanation of why their post was removed. Keep in mind that even after a post is taken down, others may have already seen the content before it was removed.

If you find yourself with repeated violations of our policies after you’ve been warned, our moderation team may take further action including temporarily disabling your account as well as deleting posts that don’t follow our policies.

What are the consequences of flagging content?

When you flag content on Instagram, it is reported to the companies’ Community Support team. Depending on the severity of the content and accompanying description, it may result in additional penalties. Posts that violate Instagram’s Terms of Use are subject to removal, including but not limited to posts containing hate speech, posts promoting violence or harm, bullying or harassment.

In more serious cases, profiles that violate these policies may be closed permanently and accounts may be issued a warning or have their accounts disabled completely. Accounts whose content violates applicable law are subject to immediate removal as required by applicable law enforcement agencies. Content reported for other reasons such as spam or unwanted contact requests may also result in warnings and disabling of accounts for repeat violations or significant infractions.

Are there any other ways to report content on Instagram?

Yes, in addition to flagging content on Instagram, there are other ways to report content that violates our Community Guidelines.

If someone is in immediate physical danger, please contact emergency services as soon as possible.

If you want to report a post or comment for violating our Community Guidelines:

  • Tap the ‘•••’ (or three dots) menu on the post or comment
  • Select ‘Report’
  • Then select the reason you’re reporting it and follow the on-screen instructions.

You can also report a profile by tapping the three dots button at the top right of their profile and then tap ‘Report’. If you don’t mind clicking through more steps then consider sending a direct message to Instagram’s Support Team via their dedicated handles (@instagramsafety is intended for reports relating to incidents described in Instagram’s Community Guidelines while @instragramcomms handles product feedback). Note that reports sent to these accounts that don’t relate to safety issues may not receive a response but will be reviewed and taken into account.

What does Instagram do with flagged content?

Regarding content flagged as inappropriate, Instagram will assess whether it violates our Community Guidelines and take appropriate action. If we receive multiple flags, the content is likely to be removed from the platform. We understand this might not always be ideal for users, but we are committed to a safe and positive experience for our global community.

In certain cases where flagged content may be in violation of the laws of your local jurisdiction, we may refer it to the authorities if required. In addition, any content related to minors that is found violating our policies will be reported to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC).

All reporting decisions will remain confidential and no user information related to those reports will ever be shared with third parties. We also encourage you to contact your local law enforcement if a situation requires additional help or intervention.

Are there any other features I should be aware of?

In addition to the flag feature, which allows users to report posts that may go against Instagram’s Community Guidelines, there are several other important features users should be aware of when using Instagram.

The “Mute” feature is a great way to reduce the amount of content you see on your feed without necessarily unfollowing someone. When you mute someone, their posts and stories will no longer appear in your feed or get notifications. However, they will still be able to send you direct messages.

The “Restrict” feature allows users to protect their comments’ visibility while still allowing others to interact with their account and view their posts. If a Restrict user receives an inappropriate or hurtful comment on a post, they can use the Restrict feature to hide those comments from the public and view them privately. This ensures that people feel safe engaging with one another without being affected by hate speech or cyberbullying.

Lastly, the Turn On Post Notifications button helps keep up-to-date on new posts from accounts users’ follow directly in their notifications tab as soon as they post something new.
